YRock meet The Preventers

The Preventers Interview 05/01/12

We caught up with the mighty Preventers recently. A young soulful rock band that hail from Cumbernauld getting ready to play their first headline gig at the Classic Grand on January 7th. With a band consiting of 7 members, we considered ourselves lucky to grab lead vocalist Sonny Leto and bassist Jamie Edwardson, to chat about the gig, their debut EP ‘Free Livin’ and The Preventers prospects for 2012:

YRock - How did the formation of the Preventers come about?

Jamie - Well, myself and Sonny started out at his place about a year ago just doing old rock’n’roll covers such as Elvis Presely, Otis Reading and really 50’s rock music. We eventually realised that we wanted more depth to our sound, so we got the drums in, two saxophones and a piano player and started playing more soul covers.

YRock - Can you tell us, how a three piece band managed to expand itself to seven members?

Sonny - The three piece was just friends jamming, it was quite informal. We never knew that we were gonna make a band and then the more we played, we thought ‘Guys this is great...we need to do something about it!’

YRock - For a fairly new band, you have played a lot of shows this year. How has that been so far?

Sonny - Since Autumn we’ve done around six or seven gigs, the highlight so far has definitely been our debut gig. A hundred and fifty people came along..which we didn’t expect, so we just went crazy…it was the best gig we’ve played so far.

YRock - Describe the Preventers sound. The bands musical style is mostly soul and mellow rock with some modern influences lurking underneath.

Sonny - We have some modern inspirations like Paolo Nutini and John Mayor, mixed in with some really classic modern rock!

YRock - So, is it this combination of musical styles that your EP ‘Free Livin’ consists of then?

Sonny - Yes, it is our debut EP and it has three songs on it. The first track titled ‘Free Livin’ is more like a classic rock and roll jiving type of song.

Jamie - The second song, ‘Remember Me’ is more folk sounding and then our third song, which is called, ‘Cold out here,’ is the most soul based track.

Sonny - We get a great response to ‘Cold out Here’ each time we play it live. A lot of people seem to turn around and start to acknowledge us when they hear it!

YRock - Well we know you have a gig at the Classic Grand on the 7th of January, what other plans does the band have for 2012?

Jamie - We’ve been getting emails through asking us to play a festival in Paisley and a number of other festivals along with it around Summer time. We also got asked to play at Nice ‘N’ Sleazys soon as well as supporting the Rudiments, which is great!

Sonny - We will definitely be playing more festivals and hopefully do a mini tour, but we still need to discuss it with the rest of the band.

Jamie - We also want to record some new material in time for the summer too.

Sonny - Yeah, 2012 will be busy for us.

YRock - We are sure of that guys, and we hope you have a cracking show this Saturday.
